Something Blue Old

Ever since my shower back in May (which feels like forever ago, but was barely 3 months ago... oh how time gets distorted when planning a wedding), I've been meaning to blog about this, but you're finally hearing about it now. While I was home on that trip, my grandmother gave me her garter from her wedding.

You can definitely tell it isn't brand new, but considering, it's held up really well. I mean it's still in its original box. I love how it has the poem on it, and it's so fitting especially considering the situation.

I'm sure that for my grandmother it was her something blue. Except I already have my blue taken care of with my shoes. But even if I didn't already have the shoes, I think the garter has to be considered my something old. And hopefully I'm able to hand it down to my future daughter for her something old as well.

To put a small kink in this plan, we're planning on doing a garter toss, and there's no way I'm tossing this. Instead I plan on buying a cheap throw away garter that we can use for the sole purpose of the toss. I don't know if it makes sense to wear both through the day or maybe change garter just before the ceremony. And I've never worn a garter before, so it's not like I have any point of reference as to what it's like wearing a single garter or instead two.

Do you think I should wear both my grandma's & my throw garter throughout the day or just one at a time? And did anyone else have a garter to keep and one to toss?

  1. I think I would wear both.... Or just switch them out right before the garter toss at the reception.

  2. It's actually common to buy a two-piece garter and have the groom only pull off one of them. A lot of couples want to keep part of it as a keepsake, just like many brides have a bouquet made especially for the toss so that they can dry their own. Not as uncommon a problem as you might think!

  3. I would just wear the garter on your wedding day and when it comes time to toss just grab a throw away one :)

  4. How very special that you have your grandmother's garter! In light of the good advice you've received here, I would wear both so you won't have to be concerned about switching them out.

  5. My garters were sold as a set of 2 on Etsy and I think I wore both like Lauren said above - the fancier "keep" one I wore higher up and the toss one I wore right above my knee so JQ wouldn't have to grope me in public. I don't remember, so clearly the garter ceremony did not make much of an impression on my wedding day experience :)

  6. I would wear a second garter for the toss. If it bothers you to wear it all day, just slip it on before the reception. Or have your groom keep it in his pocket and pretend to remove it!

  7. I love that it's been kept for so long and in it's original box! How great that you are going to be able to use it!
