In good news, this is officially the 1,000 post I've published on From L.A. to LA! In not so good news, we're expecting a hurricane tomorrow.

Now I knew when I was planning this wedding that Labor Day weekend didn't have a good history with hurricanes. It's when Katrina hit. It's when Gustav hit. It's when Tropical Storm Lee hit. But clearly no hurricane would be so inconsiderate to hit the weekend of the wedding. Except I guess Isaac is one rude fellow.

But it could be worse. We could be expecting to have a hurricane hit the day of the wedding. But since it's hitting several days before, I'm hoping that by the time the day arrives we'll have beautiful weather and it all goes as normal. I've talked to all our vendors in the past few days, and I'll be checking in with them after. I'm trying not to freak out because there's really nothing we can do at this point.

While I'm confident the wedding will happened as planned, it will be difficult for people to fly in. Anyone who was supposed to fly in our Wednesday has already changed their flight. And hopefully the airports are open on Thursday. We already received one completely expected call from someone who made the decision not to fly in.

The other major concern is electricity. I spent most of last night printing off programs, maps, welcome letters, and escort cards, and plan to do the same as long as we have power. Tomorrow I'm planning on putting everything together during the storm, although I'm guessing most people won't be too concerned about the details considering.

So I guess I should start printing now, and depending on our internet access I'll try to check in. But who knows, the next time I talk to you guys I could be an old married lady!

Back to Bourne

The Bourne Legacy
Yes, I realize this came out a few weeks ago, and we pretty much only see new movies. But there wasn't anything released we were really into this week, and we'd heard good things about this one, so that was the decision we made.

And it wound up being a good decision. I thought it was enjoyable and the boy did as well. I was a little confused at parts, although think if I had been more up on the past movies that wouldn't have been the case. And I do think some of the chase scenes were a little too long. But even so I had fun, and thought it was a great escape. It's not necessarily a movie that's groundbreaking, but it's still fun to watch.

My Two Moms

Where We Belong by Emily Giffin
I've read and enjoy every single one of Giffin's books. Some more than others obviously, but still I would recommend each one. There's just something about the way she writes that just different then most other chick lit there. Of course then, I was excited to pick this one up, and expected to enjoy it. But I more than enjoyed it, in fact I think it's probably my favorite of all of Giffin's books so far.

While I still love all her other books, it's hard for me to relate to her characters. Too often the you're supposed to identify with someone who is (or is considering) cheating on their spouse. And while I understand there's people out there who do it, it's not something I can really relate too. Then her one book that doesn't really deal with infidelity instead is one whose source of conflict is that they don't want children. And for someone who wants kids, that was also hard for me to understand. Just a lot of times too, you're not sure who you want to root for, and it makes it a difficult, but still enjoyable read

But with this one I didn't feel like I had to choose which character to root for. I was able to wish the best for each one, without feeling like another character had to loose out to do so. And while I never had to deal with getting pregnant as teen or being adopted, I still was able to identify and relate to the moral decisions made.

In some ways this book feels a little like a YA book. It brings you back to the emotions you feel falling in love for the first time. I could see how some readers might not be wanting this, but as a big YA fan, it was something I enjoyed.

Again, I'll say this is probably my favorite Emily Giffin book. I couldn't stop reading this, which in a way is disappointing because I wish I was still reading this. If you've enjoyed Giffin's past books I'm sure you'll love this. And if you've yet to read anything by her, I think this would be a great one to start with.

Wrapping Up Details

With the wedding barely a week away I've been completely wedding task after wedding task. In the past few days I've put down final payments with the DJ, the cake baker, and the florist. I've submitted our list of songs to the DJs. We've met with our wedding officiant. I've firmed up more of our wedding day timeline and sent it to our coordinator. I've started boxing up the candy bar pieces and the centerpiece items. I've sent everyone evites to the rehearsal dinner. We finished buying presents for our attendants. I've bought the items I'll be wearing under the dress. We bought our cake topper

But there's still so much that I have left to do. I need to make our programs still. I need to wrap the presents for the attendants. I need to make the escort cards. I need to print off labels for the candy bags. I need to buy wine & wine glass for our ceremony. I need to buy another wine glass to smash at the ceremony. I need to put together our welcome bags.

Then there's the items that I really wanted to do, but am thinking they might not happen. And at this point I'm ok with that. Things like bathroom baskets, or cute signs labeling all the candy for the candy bars. Things I really wanted to happen, and yet I'm ok with that. I guess I'm starting to put priority on the things that are really important to me and the other ones just aren't going to happen.

I'm guessing in the next few days I won't be posting as much or commenting on yours posts. And if I am, that probably means that I'm wasting time on the internet when there's tons of stuff I really should be doing. I'm sure I'll be stopping by a few times though, but from here on our things are going to be crazy I'm sure.

How were you feeling in the last weeks before your wedding? And did you have any projects that you originally planned on doing but had to let go over as you got closer to the wedding date?

I'm at Table Number e

Last week I was complaining to the boy about all the stuff I had left to do for the wedding. And as I started listing them off, he asked, "Do you want me to take care of writing the table number descriptions?" Of course I was more than happy for him to do so, and I love what he came up with. I was just planning on using wikipedia for most of these, but I love how the boy was able to come up with personal and easily understandable descriptions. Since I know you're curious know, here's some of my favorites.

א_o - Aleph naught - The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, א is used to represent the countable infinity. Imagine that you start counting
1,2,3,... , when would you stop? Well, never, but we do know how many
counting numbers there are... א_o.

δ - delta - This greek letter has many uses in modern mathematics. It is most commonly used to represent the smallest positive number when observing an infinitesimal change. A use more relevant to the newlyweds is the distinction of the degree of a vertex in a graph.
And now that I had the descriptions ready I could make a final mock-up of our centerpieces. Just as a reminder, here's what it looks like during the last mock-up. You can see I've since that last post not only have I added the table numbers, but the blue rocks in with the candle.

From the BackSince the mock-up I've boxed all of the wine bottles which have each been stuffed with flowers. I've started filling all the candle jars too but still have a few more to finish.

Under CandlelightI am really happy with the way these turned out. I had some mild freak-outs along the way with the idea of diy-ing my centerpieces, but I think they wound up looking not half bad.

We're Licensed

The past week the boy and carpooled into work. He dropped me off and the way in, and then picked me up at the end of the day. And once he picked me up we were off to the Clerk of Court's office to pick up our wedding license.
This is me with our unofficial license, aka the pretty one we get to keep and display or scrapbook. We were given two official ones to mail back, and this one means absolutely nothing, but I guests brides were complaining about not having an heirloom version of it.

The whole thing was pretty harmless. We went in and gave them our birth certificates to make copies off. Then had to type our contact info into their computer systems. From there we had to waited a few minutes while they created our documents. But once they were finished, and we were about $30 poorer we were ready to go.

The workers at the office seemed to be awfully impressed with how patience we were being, granted we were both playing with our phones so it was easy to stay entertained. When I mentioned that to the boy (after a 2nd employees thanked us for being patient) he pointed at the man at the desk with a file of folders who was being told he still didn't have the right documents for what he wanted to do. He seemed pretty calm as well, but I'm guessing they deal with people all the time who aren't happy with the government's process.

But again, we had no issues with it, and now we're officially ready to be married.

Who is The Expendable One?

So there really isn't much of a plot to this, it's more of action scene after action scene with cameo after cameo. Not necessarily my type of movie, but I'm not the intended audience.

There was one plot twist I wasn't a huge fan of. But considering they aren't marketing this movie to 20-something girls I understand why they did it. But just because I understand it, doesn't mean I like it.

For an action movie, it's actually pretty funny, and it looks like all the actors had a blast making it. You can bet if an action is associated with a specific line, or even a theme song, it's in there. So not a movie I'd be dying to watch again, but for what it is, it's pretty amusing.

Sunday Social (4)

Today we're having a little flashback with A Complete Waste of Make-Up's Sunday Social. I'm really looking forward to every one's posts this week to see just what you looked like when you were younger. So Let's get to the pictures!

1. What were you like in Middle School/HS?(pictures)
This is me, I believe, in 7th grade. The photo was taken by my BFF/MOH in the empty field by her house. Our houses were about 40 minutes apart but my parents made the drive over and over so we could spend weekends together. There were probably month long stretches were we didn't see each other, but once we had our driver's licences that trip got a little easier.
2. What were your favorite past times?
I spent most of my time playing soccer. The picture below is in 6th grade. Our team was called "No Fear" which my mom coached to a 6th grade finish. By high school I was playing club as well as at high school. The seasons in California meant we played year round. So club was in the fall, high school was in the winter, then club had spring season, consisting mostly of tournaments. Then in the summer I had both high school and club practices and games.
3. What songs were you obsessed with?(Backstreet Boys anyone?)
How did you know? Seriously, all you have to do is click on my music tag to see that I'm still Backstreet obsessed. I saw them in concert 4 times in high school, and would have gone a 5th time is that concert hadn't been canceled due to AJ being in rehab. The picture below is my BFF/MOH on the lawn on a Backstreet concert, I believe senior year of high school.
4. What fashion statement do you look back on and cringe?
Well I have no fashion sense now, so I definitely didn't have one as a teen. I remember one day in middle school putting on a pair of pants and my mom telling me they were probably too small and back in her day they would call them floods. Of course my mom had to be wrong and I told her no one used that phrase anymore. Of course come to find out middle school-er definitely still used it.

5. Who was your celeb crush?
Nick Carter, obviously. (See question 3!)

6. What were your favorite tv shows/movies?
I loved Part of Five. It was the first "grown-up type" show I remember watching starting in 4th grade or so. I watched every single season, and still remember being disappointed when in finally ended when I was in 10th grade. As for my favorite movies, they would have been The Little Princess and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers which are still some of my favorites.

You Think You Know

The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve
I probably never would have picked this one up if I wasn't reading it for a book club I'm in. I mean I've seen Anita Shreve's books before, but I've never really given her much though. I had no idea what type of books she writes or if there's a general theme that in each of her books. Basically I went into this not knowing what to expect, and came out enjoying it.

My biggest complaint with the book is that it's depressing, which isn't always a bad thing. It does feel like I've read a lot of books dealing with death in the months since my mom died. (It could also be that I just notice the death aspect more.) But while I think reading about someone else going through the a simialat experience is somewhat therapeutic, the book to a turn that I hadn't anticipated. Basically it's about how well do you really know someone, and the secrets that come out after their death which is something I really wanted to think about.

I couldn't imagine going through that Kathryn goes through after her pilot husband dies in a plane crash. But all things considering she seems to make it through alright. The book does end somewhat ambiguous, but I like to think she had a good future ahead of her.

This book made me think, and definitely got my emotions going. While I wouldn't list it on my top ten list, I enjoyed it enough that I'd love to read more by Shreve.

How Sweet it Is

It's finally time to blog about my favorite part of the wedding...
The Candy Bar!
I started picking up candy bar in February to make use of the after Valentine's Day sales. And did the exact same thing after Easters. (That's why you'll see both Sweethearts and Starburst Jellybeans in this mix.) But most of this candy I bought this past weekend at Albertsons. There's almost 45 pounds of candy in here, and since I've heard the recommendation is half a pound per person and we're expecting around 100 guests we're pretty good. Although I still might pick up a few more options. After all my favorite candy, aka Zours, still aren't in this mix.
I did look into buying a bunch of candy online wholesale, but the shipping is where I had an issue. I did find some sites that had flat rate shipping. Except that was only for their standard shipping, and I was planning on shipping candy in the middle of the summer in Louisiana. Yes, I could buy ice packs to include as well as insulated boxes, but there's no way I could ship using standard shipping and still expect the candy to arrive in tact. I wasn't even sure next day shipping would work. On top of that overnight shipping for 50 pounds was ridiculous and half of the cost of the candy itself.
Basically I priced out 50 pounds, on 2 separate websites, at around $300 (including shipping). But the candy I bought above was right around $150. So just because you're looking wholesale doesn't mean it's cheaper. Of course if you are only looking for candy in one or two specific colors that might be the way to go. But I was going more for "candy I enjoy" instead of "candy that looks pretty".
Then there was the jars and scoops. I bought some jars at Michael's (making sure to use a 40% off coupons) and the Dollar Store. The boy's mom contributed a few. And a co-worker was also getting rid of all the jars she used for the candy bar at her sister's baby shower. In total we spent around $25 on jars.
I order the metal scoops from Scoops-Scoops based on Mrs. Unicycle's recommendation. Then wound up finding the purple and blue scoops on clearance at Target. In total we spent around $40 on 15 scoops.
Finally I bought the bags off Coffee Wholesale USA. They look a little plain now, but I'm planning on adding a cute sticker on them to jazz them up a bit. I bought 100 of them for around $25.
In total I spent around $250 on the candy bar, which is acting as our favor. (The boy actually told me if it gets close to the end of the night and there's still a lot of candy left, we need to start filling bags up and handing them out so we don't bring the leftovers back into the house.) Considering I estimated $200 for this based on absolutely no information, that really isn't too far off.

I'm on the Victoria's Secret mailing list, which means every single day, so it seems to me at least, I'm getting an e-mail from them announcing a limited time deal or a new product. Most times I at least look at the pictures, but recently I saw a deal I had to participate in.

So, on a recent trip to the mall I made my one purchase, aka 5 pairs of Pink brand underwear for about $25. After all, what's the point of buying one if you can buy 5 at a better price. Plus you can never have too much underwear. In college I used to say the more underwear you had the less you have to do laundry. I'd like to say I've grown up and that's no longer the case, but that wouldn't be the complete truth.
But once I had the underwear I was able to fulfil the reason I came to the store. See, they were offering a free pair of underwear with purchase. Yes, I realize they do that promotional ALL the time, but this wasn't just any pair of underwear. But bridal underwear!

It's hard to see, but little rhinestones on the right spell out BrideIt was one size fits all, which had me a little leery. Especially since it looked so much bigger than all the other pairs I bought. But I tried it on, and I guess there's enough elastic in them, (or they like the pants that fit all 4 girls of the sisterhood), and they fit. Which means I can officially check off buy bridal underwear from the to-do list.

The Front

& BackNot quite the same right? I mean besides running our address through a printer they didn't either bother to customize it. I realize I shouldn't be complaining over something like this but still, why did I get the downgrade?

I know I sent my invitations after the 6 months they recommend. But I would have rather gotten the signed photo (& button!) even if it meant getting it a few weeks after the wedding. I wonder if I'm just the unlucky one here, or so many brides have caught on and started mailing Disney their invitations, that they decide to downgrade their response.

If anyone else sent a celebrity invite, what type of response did you get? And any other reasonable suggestions on why this is what I got in return?

Monday Movie Review

Hope Springs
So we may not have been the target demographic for this, but I still really enjoyed it. The boy even didn't hate it. He thought the first half was slow, but he did enjoy the second.

There were a few awkward scenes but overall it was fun. Steve Carrel was a little surprising since while this was a comedy, he played the most serious part in it.

We were by far the youngest ones in the theater. To the point when it was over one woman came up to us and told us just that. Than another came up to us and said, "Now you two won't be needed counseling will you!" I guess because the boy was willing to see this with me it meant he was willing to sacrifice for me. But while they may be true, the real reason I was able to convince him to go was because Expendables 2 is in theaters next week.

I do think this is one you'd probably enjoy, although unless you're like the boy and me and see a movie every week, this could probably wait till it's out on dvd. Plus if you watch it at home you don't have to worry about little old ladies giving you a hard time for watching it!

It's Sunday and once again I'm linking up with A Complete Waste of Make-Up's Sunday Social. This weekend is food related, which I'm always obsessed with, so I've been looking forward to this all week long!If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Lasagna. I'm pretty much obsessed with it, and order it every single time we go to an Italian restaurant. Plus you can always make it a little different by changing a few ingredients to make a different spin on in. I've seen Mexican versions and Mediterranean ones, and I'm sure there are a ton others.

I'm a huge dessert person, but especially candy. And my all time favorite candy has to be Zours.
What's the weirdest/craziest thing you've ever eaten?
Well I don't think it's weird, but a lot of people may. I'm obsessed with feta. To the point where I eat slices of it drizzled in olive oil and vinegar. And I love heading to Zoe's (a local chain) because they're the only place I've heard of where they serve grilled feta sandwiches.
What foods do you avoid at all costs?
Despite my answer to the last questions, I'm not a fan of most milk products. Things like cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, macaroni and cheese, yogurt, Alfredo sauce, and whatnot. The big exception are various cheeses or things where there's enough sugar to counteract it (like ice cream or whipped cream).

What meal reminds you of your childhood?
Most birthdays my mom would ask me what I wanted for dinner and I would almost always pick lasagna and a Cesar salad. But the food that probably reminds me of being little is risotto. The first few times my mom made it I wasn't a huge fan because I thought it was too much like macaroni and cheese. So basically as I kid I thought risotto wasn't refined enough for me. I guess I'm slightly less refined now because it's one of my current favorites.

Share one of your favorite recipes and the story behind it.
This is my mom's pancake recipe (courtesy of Marion Cunningham's The Breakfast Book). Growing up I loved pancakes in general, but I especially loved them up in the mountains. There's just something about being in the mountains that made them taste magical. This is also probably one of the first recipes I asked my mom for. She sent it to me back in college when I was living in an off-campus apartment with a kitchen. After I graduated she wound up with a new copy of the book, and give me her used, falling apart original. I feel awful admitting this, but it has been forever since I've actually woken up and cooked pancakes. But here I'll promise myself that before the end of the year, probably after the wedding, I'll make a batch of pancakes.

An Outlander Love Story

Timeless Desire by Gwyn Cready
Panna Kennedy is a librarian, still getting over the death of her husband two years prior. Her library is facing budget cuts so she searches the library in hopes in finding something to help turn things around. But in her search she instead walks through a door that takes here to the Highlands in Scotland, where she meets the handsome Captain Bridgewater, soldier of the British army.

Going into this I thought it would be cute, and probably a little cheesy. I thought I would enjoy it, but wasn't expecting too much from it. Except the book took me by surprise and I really enjoyed my time with it.

I was afraid the book would be all romance and little history. Not that it would have been a bad thing, and I still would have enjoyed it, but I love reading more historical books. I can't say how historically accurate the situation in Scotland was, but there was enough name dropping (mainly Queen Anne and the Duke of Marlborough) that it felt authentic to me.

At lot of time when I read these romance type books, the love scenes read a little uneasy for me. But after read 50 Shades, this felt really tame. I have a feeling this is going to be true for most romance books I read now, and it's definitely an interesting development.

Again, this book was a great surprise and a fun escape from everyday life. It was the perfect version of a romance meets history for me, and I think I'd really enjoy Cready other books as well.

Something Blue Old

Ever since my shower back in May (which feels like forever ago, but was barely 3 months ago... oh how time gets distorted when planning a wedding), I've been meaning to blog about this, but you're finally hearing about it now. While I was home on that trip, my grandmother gave me her garter from her wedding.
You can definitely tell it isn't brand new, but considering, it's held up really well. I mean it's still in its original box. I love how it has the poem on it, and it's so fitting especially considering the situation.

I'm sure that for my grandmother it was her something blue. Except I already have my blue taken care of with my shoes. But even if I didn't already have the shoes, I think the garter has to be considered my something old. And hopefully I'm able to hand it down to my future daughter for her something old as well.

To put a small kink in this plan, we're planning on doing a garter toss, and there's no way I'm tossing this. Instead I plan on buying a cheap throw away garter that we can use for the sole purpose of the toss. I don't know if it makes sense to wear both through the day or maybe change garter just before the ceremony. And I've never worn a garter before, so it's not like I have any point of reference as to what it's like wearing a single garter or instead two.

Do you think I should wear both my grandma's & my throw garter throughout the day or just one at a time? And did anyone else have a garter to keep and one to toss?

Ribbon, Cards, & Gold Medals

It's so crazy as we get closer to the wedding seeing the projects I've had in my mind actually exist in real life. You would think that would make it start to feel real, but it still hasn't hit yet. There's not a lot of time yet, but at the rate I'm going I don't think it's going to feel real till the morning of.

Back to the actual point, with the wedding projects. Yesterday I shared our table numbers, and today the vision, that's now a reality, is the place card holders. I've had the idea for a while and can't tell you where I first saw it, but here's a version from Mrs. Eggplant.

sourceI thought it seemed pretty, but more than that, simple enough for me to pull off. So Friday night, sitting down to watch the Olympics I got out my supplies.
Yes, I used tape that I had hanging around the house and child-size scissors. Obviously not too difficult to come by, although I probably spent too much money on the ribbon. But there's enough left over for some other type of project.
Basically all I did was wrap the ribbon around the glass pane and tape it down. Although if I was doing this again, I would NOT use see through ribbon. I can't believe I wasn't smart enough to think of that before because you can very clearly see the folded over ribbon.
Thankfully though you can't really see the tape. So while watching Missy Franklin...
and Katie Ledecky swam for gold, I was sitting on the couch making place card holders.
I wound up making 3, and with the other two cut the ribbon short enough so you couldn't really see it.
And while I did a mock-up with cards (ripping up the white backing inside one of the frames), I'm not completely sure how many cards I can fit in a single frame. Hopefully I can fit them all on 2 of the frames and not use the first one. But while it's actually filled with cards, I can't imagine anyone will really pay attention to the slight imperfection.

I'm at Table Number What? - The Execution

Almost a year ago I wrote this post about my idea for the table numbers. The following day my mom sent me this email.

Of course, the way things work out, that blogger is no longer blogging, my mom is no longer here to e-mail me, and I decided not to go with cake pulls. But I did finally create out table numbers.
I made this pretty much the exact same was as my wrap around labels using tables in word. The main differences being I started the a 3x3 table, I made the outside border thinner, and obviously put different stuff inside the boxes.
I order to flip one box upside down I did have to use a text box, which I discovered using a helpful google search.
As a math major, inserting the numbers was easy enough, since I had to do it for papers back in college. (Thankfully I didn't have to start using LaTex till grad school.) But I could see how if you aren't familiar with the process of editing equations it could be tricky.
I did have trouble though with one of the numbers the boy suggested, the one that represents the complete banach space of all differential functions, since I wasn't sure what the symbol was actually called. I could draw it on a piece of paper for you, and I'm sure I could find it for LaTex, but for all I know you may not be able to type it in word.
The boy wasn't happy with the Q I used, to represent all rational numbers, since the way you draw it, it's only double-sided on the left side, but it's the best representation I could find. I'm also not completely happy with the aleph naught, since I think the subscript is to big and it doesn't feel centered. But it is still my favorite number since it's Hebrew and math-y (it represents the countable version of infinity).
On the symbols people my not be familiar with I made sure to write out the name that way they're not just matching a symbol, although I would hope all our guests can recognize π. But on the ones that are easily recognizable, like e or i, I thought those by themselves were enough.
This project isn't completely finished yet, because I do plan I writing up a small paragraph that defines each number for those curious. But so far, I love it, and I hope our guests enjoy them.
Did you do anything unique for your table numbers? And how many of our numbers can you actually define or even just recognize? (Just be happy I'm not asking you to arrange them from smallest to largest, which the boy already decided to do.)
