Disney Sea at the Tokyo Disney Resort
Back in 2008 I went with my parents to Japan to visit my brother who was studing abroad. Everyone had their own ideas of where they wanted to visit, but my only request was that we headed to Tokyo Disney. Instead of heading to the Tokyo Disney itself, which is like Disneyland or the Magic Kindom in Orlando, we went to Disney Sea.

One reason we made this choice was because we've already been on the main Disney rides tons of times in California. But the other reason was because I've wanted to go Disney Sea since the early 90s! Back then they was no plans to build this park in Japan, instead they were trying to build it in Long Beach, California, my hometown. Unfortunatly the plans fell through financially, and it wound up being built overseas. But finally being at the park really made me wonder what it could have been like if things had worked out differently.

I could be wrong, but I believe this was taken in Texas, although it might have been in New Mexico. This was Summer 2006, right after college graduation. I spent about 2 weeks driving my car cross country from Maryland back to California for the summer.

Got Crabs

Baltimore, Maryland
I spent four years at college in Maryland. Where there I learned how to eat and enjoy crabs (along with the actually school learning). I'm pretty good at getting all the meat out, but I probably won't be winning any contest with my speed. One of my favorite ways to enjoy the crab meat is dipping it vinegar. This photo of me and my parents was taken June 2005, the summer after my Junior year of college.

A Day at Versailles

This week for Classy in Philadelphia's Where in the World Wednesday we're heading to...
Versailles
This again was on my 2005 France trip. The 5 of us (aka the Paris Posse as we dubbed ourselves) headed to Versailles. At the Metro we were able to buy tickets that included the train ride to and from, as well as the actual tour at the palace.

On the train ride there, we sat next to a group of fellow Americans. We didn't talk to them, but did overhear their conversation.
"Any idea why we're going to this place?"
"Well I've heard of the Treaty of Versailles. And that ended World War II, so this must have been built to celebrate the end of the war."

Once we reached the palace we were welcomed by Louis XIV.
He's actually the one who built the palace. And I'm pretty sure he wasn't alive in the 1940s...

We took a tour of the palace.
This is the chapel in the palace. The hall of mirrors was actually being restored while we were there. They had kept half of it open, so you could attempt to get the feel of it. But I wasn't that impressed, and didn't wind up with any pictures. (I have since seen pictures of it since it's been restored and will say that now it looks impressive.)

After the palace tour we had a picnic of food we brought with us overlooking the gardens.
We finished eating and headed out to explore,
and engage in some fountain jumping.
The first picture in this post is my own failed attempt at fountain jumping.

After a day filled with such culture we headed to McDonald's! There wasn't one technically at Versailles. But in order to walk from the train to the palace you walked by one. So we headed over to share some French fries and McFlurries. (No picture of McDonald's. I wasn't blogging back then, and hadn't grasped just how important it was to document everything!)

New Orleans
At Lafayette cemetery #1 to be more exact. Considering I've been living in Louisiana for almost four years now, I've spent fairly little time in New Orleans. This was actually taken on my first trip where I spent anytime in the city. It was summer 2006 and I had just graduated college. My dad actually had a conference that summer in New Orleans, which worked out perfectly because it gave me a chance to stop in Baton Rouge and get my apartment all settled for the fall and my first semester of grad school as LSU.

Tel Aviv
This was taken on my Birthright Israel trip, almost two years ago. (Seriously! Two years? How did that happen?) Our flight landed on a Friday afternoon, which meant we couldn't actually do anything until Sunday since it was Shabbat. So instead we got to start our trip with a relaxing day at the beach. This was almost the complete opposite of how much we did in the days following. Here's a picture of the actual beach, which is fun since it shows off the Tel Aviv skyline in the background.

New Mexico
This was taken summer 2006, the summer after college graduation. Once I graduated I had to get my car from Maryland to California for the summer. I did half the drive with my dad, then the second half with a friend from high school. On the drive we made a point to stop and take a picture at each state's welcome sign. Since this picture was taken just after New Mexico we were only a few states away from our destination.

The Louvre in Paris, France
These were taking on my study abroad trip in Summer 2005. We spent three weeks in class in Avignon, and at the end of the trip most of us traveled to Paris to spent a few extra days before flying back to the States. On my last day there I made sure we all went to the Louvre. This was technically my second time there, the first when I was just a year old. Which really means this is the only time that counts. I was so excited to be there and took tons of pictures of all the different artworks and sculptress. I've posted just a few of my favorites below.

In the City that Never Sleep

New York City

We did all the standard touristy things like the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Ellis Island.
They even took us to see a Broadway play.The Diary of Anne Frank. Pretty perfect considering this was a trip through our temple, right? Here's a picture of the cast painted on the side of the theater.
At least it's most of the cast. Clearly my 13-year-old photo taking abilities weren't that amazing. But do you notice anyone familiar in that picture?
Natalie Portman started as Anne Frank! This was about a year before Star Wars: Episode 1 was released. So she had been in a few movies at the time, but she wasn't really that famous. But I can officially say I saw Natalie Portman act before she got famous.

Just Beachy

Bolsa Chica Beach, California

This was taken Summer 2006, only a few days before I moved to Louisiana.

One of my favorite aspects about this beach is that there's bonfire pits on the sand. There were many times growing up where we'd head to Bolsa Chica for a bonfire. You'd normally get there early in the day to enjoy the sun, but after the sun went down you'd hang out around the fire roasting marshmallows in sweatshirts. In general, the fire pits were in high demand, and this day in August we didn't quite get there early enough to stake out our own pit. But even without a fire, we still had a great day at the beach.

Some Beach, Somewhere

I'm back with another week of Classy in Philadelphia's Where in the World Wednesday. I'm keeping with the beach theme I started last week, and this week I'm at...

Huntington Beach, California.

In general Huntington was where you went if you were looking to get some sort of actual waves. See, there are no waves at Long Beach due to the breakwater that was built to keep waves out of the port. Which means Long Beach really isn't a good beach if you looking for something to actually be beach-y. Luckily, Huntington is just down the road so you're able to have an actual beach experience without a lot of driving. (Unlike where I am in Louisiana now, where a beach experience would require quite a bit of driving.)

As for this picture, it was taken in summer 2004, just after my sophomore year of college.

Life's a Beach

This picture was taken over winter break my during my freshmen year of college. And just as a warning, don't be surprised if you start seeing a whole series of beach Where in the World Wednesday. While its slowly starting to be beach weather, living in Louisiana I don't have a lot of beaches to go to. So instead I might just have to live vicariously through my Where in the World Wednesday posts.

Palm Springs, California.

These were taken in Summer 2004, just following my sophomore year of college.
The four of us drove up to Palm Springs and spent a long weekend all together. We spent almost all of our time lounging out at the pool, and went out to dinner each night.
This trip was a little monumental for me, in that it was the first vacation I'd gone on with just friends, where we planned it all. Instead of all the family vacations I'd taken previously.
I do realize the picture quality isn't that great on some of these. But that's because they were taken with film and scanned into my computer. It's funny to think how mainstream digital cameras are now, when just a few years ago most people didn't have one.

Saint Patrick's Day Edition

Not only is today Saint Patrick's Day, but its also a Where in the World Wednesday. And in honor I wanted to post a picture taken in Ireland. Except there's one small problem. I've never actually been to Ireland. Fine, I guess that's a pretty big problem. Instead I started thinking if I've been to anywhere near Ireland. So this week I'm in Wales!
It's near Ireland after all, and they're both part of the United Kingdom. I realize there aren't a lot of identifying features here, so you're just going to have to trust me that this picture was truly taken in ales.

This was taken in November 2003, when I visited my best friend who was studying abroad in England. We took a day trip out to Wales. We saw Millennium stadium, stopped in at a beer and ale feast, and road a ferris wheel which gave us a view of the city. The top of the ferris wheel is also where this picture was taken.

More Parade Fun

It's a Wednesday, so I'm participating in yet another week of Classy in Philadelphia's Where in the World Wednesday. This week I'm back in my home state in California.
To be more precise I'm in Downtown L.A. at Laker Parade. This was Summer 2002, just days after my high school graduation. The Lakers had just won their second championship in a row, and since I was officially done with school. So it seemed like a good time to celebrate. This was back in the days when Shaq was wearing the Laker purple and gold. (As opposed to back in the days when Shaq was wearing LSU purple in gold, in case you were confused!)

The Countess of LA

the Chateau d'If, which is just of the shore of Marseille, France. The was taken during my month long study abroad trip to Avignon, France in Summer 2005. The Chataeu d'If is a jail, on an island just off the coast of Marseille. Here's what the island looks like from the shore.
It's the smaller island in the center. The Chateau was built in the 1500s by Francois I as a fortress. In the 1700s it was used as an actual prison. The prison was made famous in the book The Count of Monte Cristo. Although I've never read the book, I believe the main character (the count perhaps?) escapes from the Chateau d'If early in the book. Hopefully with that explanation my not-so-cleaver title is making at least a little sense.
