Let's Get Evolved

The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Published
: March 1, 2012
Series: Mara Dyer #2
I was so excited to read the first in this series, and yet while I enjoyed it, it did let me down. Unfortunately, with this second one I almost want to say it disappointed me. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed it, but not as much as the first.

There is just so much going on in this book, and at times I almost thought Mara really was crazy. While she didn't necessarily think she was, and there was evidence she wasn't, I couldn't help but wonder how reliable of a narrator she was. Things did finally come together at the end, but it was a long road to get there.

One aspect I loved about the first, the way Mara's family interacted and each member's personality, was almost absent from this. Don't get me wrong, they were still there, but they weren't nearly as big of an impact on the story as I would have liked.

Then of course the ending, which almost made everything else about this book work. There's so much that happens in the last few pages you find yourself rereading sections just to make sure you're not missing pieces. It's such a cliffhanger too that you feel the need to start reading the third book RIGHT NOW, except you can't because it's not out yet.

There's still a lot of positives about this series, and I'm glad I finally picked it up. But yet, I really hope the third book reaches its full potential, and makes it all really worth reading.

Top 10 Books of 2013

As much as I loved coming up with my list of my favorite books of the year, I also hated it. Each one if a favorite for a different reason, and there's a few others that came close that I can't believe I'm not including. Also I think that your feelings change on books after you read it, so if I were to write this post a year from now my favorites could be completely different based on how they still resonate with me. But here are my favorites from 2013, at least based on how I feel at this exact moment.

1. The Promise of Stardust by Priscille Sibley
This book still brings up emotion thinking about it. It's a really thought provoking post, but the center of it all is a love story. Plus one of the characters was an astronaut which I think is one of the coolest jobs ever.

2. Paris was the Place by Susan Conley
I know I said this in my review, but I really do feel like this book was written specifically for me. It really spoke to the period of my life I'm currently in, and while I think I would have loved it if I read it for years ago (or 5 years from now) it's just the book I needed right now.

3. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Do I really need to explain why this one is here? I'm sure it's on everyone's top 10 list the year they read it. I recently saw the movie poster, and just that gets me excited for the idea that they might be able to do it justice.

4. Together Tea by Marjan Kamali
Another book that's perfect for the period of life that I'm currently in. Like a lot of the others on my list it does focus on a mother/daughter relationship, which is one of the reason I loved it and why it made me cry.

5. Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare
Like every other book I've posted so far, this one again made me cry. I do have my complaints about Cassandra Clare, but I do think this was a perfect end to the trilogy.

6. The Gods of Heavenly Punishment by Jennifer Cody Eppstein
I've actually yet to post my review of this book since it's not scheduled till January. But get ready, because I loved it. Part of it was because it's related to my own family's history. But even without that link, I still think I would have fallen in love with it.

7. The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay
Finally, I think I'm posting a book that didn't bring me to tears! Although there were moments that could have, so don't go in expecting a happy book. One aspect I enjoyed about this one was that it was so different from most anything else I've read. But still had the same type of feel I look for in a book.

8. A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash
In some ways I'm not sure why I have this book here, but for whatever reason it is one I really enjoyed. I feel like in some way it's a modern day To Kill a Mockingbird, and know there' certain scenes in it I'm not going to be able to forget.

9. The Ward by Jordana Frankel
Maybe it's somewhat cheating to have this here since the author was my college roommate and one of my bridesmaids, but I still really loved this book. I can't wait to read the sequel, if only she'd actually finish writing it, but once she does I will again be running out to buy it.

10. Survival Lessons by Alice Hoffman
This is the second book I've read by Alice Hoffman and the second year in a row she's made my top 10 list. This isn't the type of book I normally read, but with such a beautiful message it's hard to pass up.

What books would make up your top 10 reads of 2012? And have you read any of the books on my list?

If you're curious, these are my top 10 books from 2012.

It's a Jolly Holiday

Saving Mr. Banks
I almost don't know where to start with this one because there's so many aspects of it I loved. I loved the flashbacks to P.L. Travers' life growing up in Australia. I loved Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. I loved the scenes at Disneyland because you could tell it was filmed today since certain sections of the park really haven't changed. I loved the clips of Mary Poppins and now am wanting to buy it on dvd to watch it in its entirety. Even the boy enjoyed himself and found himself humming along.

It probably goes without saying that parts of this movie brought me to tears, but that happens with most movies lately. I'm really happy we managed to fit this one in with all the movies that come out in December, and definitely would recommend you to do the same.

Sunday Social (17)

With Christmas only 3 days away, I decided to join in the holiday spirit and link up with Sunday Social at A Complete Waste of MakeUp for a few holiday questions.
1. What is your favorite holiday season tradition?
Three years ago I wrote this post about the Christmas traditions I remember from growing up. Basically, when I was little we would drive out my grandparents and spent Christmas with them. But now that I'm officially "a grown-up" we're still establishing our traditions, although this year we're spending the day with my husband's family.

2. Do you have a certain holiday movie you watch more than others?
Growing up it was It's a Wonderful Life, but now it would have to be Love Actually.

3. Show us your favorite decoration or pinterest decoration you wish you could have.
I would love a nice big wreath on our front door. But out of the ones we have, I love this ornament my husband bought me at Disney World two years ago.

4. What is your favorite holiday song?
I always really liked "Light One Candle," which I learned as I wrote this post was done by Peter, Paul, and Mary. But as for actual Christmas songs, it would be "All I Want For Christmas is You," but specifically the version from Love Actually.
5. What is your favorite holiday dessert?
I'm not sure I have an official favorite holiday dessert. But that's probably because I'm more than willing to eat anything when there's sugar involved.

6. What is on your wish list this year?
I wrote this post earlier this year with a full list, but new to that list would be the Frozen Soundtrack which I've been wanting since I saw the movie.

If you haven't answered these questions yet, let me know what some of yours answers would be. And it you're stopping by from Sunday Social, be sure to say hi and let me know you were here!
