Sweet As Candy

L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad
This book tells the completely fictional tale of Jane, a girl who just moved to L.A., winds up being discovered, and shooting a reality show with 3 of her closest friends. Except she never realized this silly little reality show would make her famous, and what being famous would be like.

But let's get real. Even though the start of the book includes a disclaimer that "characters and all incidents and dialogue are drawn from the author's imagination and are not to be construed as 'real,'" it's pretty obvious that the book is based on Lauren Conrad's experience with both Laguna Beach and The Hills. It isn't exactly what happened, but most definitely is based on reality. (Probably in the same form that The Hills is based on reality.) It's interesting to read about how Lauren Jane receives text messages from the producers telling her things like to repeat herself or to act more into her date. Or how they would have to wait enter or leave a place just so the production had time to set up. I get the feelings that these small things definitely happened.

It was also interesting to read in the book how the tv show set them Jane and her roommate Scarlet up with two other friends. I'm pretty sure that's close to what happened on the show as well. I was a little surprised that there wasn't really a Whitney character in the book. Instead Heidi seemed to be split over 2 of the casts members.

Overall, it was a fun book. I would definitely be willing to read the sequel.

P.S. And speaking of Lauren Conrad, I can't wait to see the season premier of The Hills tonight. I'm really curious as to how the whole reaction over Heidi's surgery is going to good. It wouldn't be surprised in there's pretty record high numbers this season with what happened, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was part of the reason why Heidi had her surgeries in the first place.

  1. Interesting... I thought her book would be way less autobiographical.

I used to be a Hills watcher, but then I gave it up after I started hearing how staged everything was. And I stopped feeling sorry for Lauren because she just sort of asks for drama in her life in a way! It was tough to give up after following them for years, but I still hear plenty about it form, friends or on the radio, etc. I can't believe how many procedures Heidi has had! Yikes!

  2. since I have been an avid Hills watcher, I guess I should read this book! though, I have to admit, I sort of laughed when I heard she was writing a book at all. It didn't seem like she would be one to write a book... but Lauren has definitely stepped out of the reality show limelight and seems to be focusing more on a real career in writing and fashion, so good for her.

and even though it is totally staged and ridiculous, I will be watching the final season! I can't help myself! :)

  4. I have been an LC fan since the beginning Laguna Beach days. But I definitely have not been an avid Hills watcher since she left(even though Kristen is quite, um, entertaining). It is literally painful to look at pictures and video of Heidi now. Her face doesn't move at all when she talks! So sad because she was naturally pretty when she first showed up on the shows... and obviously her obsession with fame and beauty have taken over.

  6. I loved this book and also enjoyed trying to figure out what was from The Hills and such. I feel like Lauren really wants to come clean about what really went down but since she is under contract, writing this book was the closest she can come to telling the truth.
