Friday Night in Texas

The One and Only by Emily Giffin

I've always loved Emily Giffin's books. There's just something about the characters she writes. They're never perfect and while part of you always seems to cringe while reading, you still enjoy yourself, and in spite of their flaws you still manage to fall for them. Except not with this one. I just couldn't quite get past the bad choices this time.

Going into this I knew college football was a big theme, which I was actually excited for. I think if I read this before my move to Louisiana I wouldn't have got it as much. But the boy has done his job of converting my to a college football fan, LSU more specifically, and because of that I enjoyed it. Although I can see how if you're not into is as much, this would be hard to read.

As for the big twist, I could see it coming but hopped I wasn't right. I think there's so many better ways this story could have turned out and really wasn't happy with the progression. Although I do think part of it is my own personal history. Knowing that the book starts at the funeral of the mother of one of the characters, and that I lost my own mother almost 3 years ago made it harder for me. Especially since so much of the book deals with everyone's grief and what happens afterwards. I'm sure if I read this book several years ago, it wouldn't have been nearly as awful for me, but right now it hits a little too close to home.

Don't get me wrong, I still love Emily Giffin and will likely run out to buy her next one again. But I don't think this is one I'm ever going to find myself rereading.

2.5/5

Today I'm linking up with Blonde Undercover Blonde for Book Club Friday!

  1. I really loved Emily Giffin books but haven't read one for awhile. Even though you didn't seem to like it much, I'm going to check it out.

  3. Agreed! This was my least favorite of hers. I really didn't like much of anything about it at all!
