Soundtrack to Your Life

Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult
Until this, I had never read a Jodi Picoult book. Obviously I've heard a lot about her, and I've seen the movie version of My Sister's Keeper, so I had an idea of what I was getting into. The book actually wound up being exactly what I expected, and I mean that in a good way.

This book is the type that you really don't want to put down. It presents a moral dilemma, which turns into a court case (as I believe in most of her books), and you can't wait to hear how it will all turn out. I have heard that once you've read one of hers you know what to expect with the others. But even though this was my first I still was able to guess a lot of twists and turns (although I will admit that might also be due to spoiler-y reviews I read before).

The book's moral dilemma has to due with whether its better for a child to be raised with her gay parents compared to a Christian based "normal" couple. Both views are presented, but I had a hard type believing the more evangelical Christian points of view. It may be because I have the opposite viewpoint already, but I also read some reviews online by those who had the more that opposite viewpoint and even they felt Picoult didn't due justice to it.

It does leave a few plots points ambiguous towards the end, and I'd love to know more exactly what happens to everyone involved. But with it's faults I still was big fan of the story and its characters. And could easily see myself checking out a few more of Picoult's books.

4.5/5

Disclosure: I was provided this book through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. All opinions expressed are my own.

  1. Picoult's books are great, quick reads. Sadly I got tired of her formula but I think read about 6 of them all in a row.

  2. Picoult's books are rather formulaic but they're still pretty good. I've read several, including including Sing You Home. Sing You home was the first book I've ever read with an accompanying soundtrack so that was interesting.

  3. I have only read one of her books (Nineteen Minutes.) I really liked it and it really made you think. I had no idea what this one was about. I still plan to read it but I think that I will have a hard time reading some of what I would consider more closed minded viewpoints....but who knows.

I think the key to not getting tired of an author is not to read too many of their books in a row. I like to switch it up.

    Great review!

  5. i have read all her stuff and she is quite an intense and controversial story teller, but most of her books are very hard to put down and you become so engrossed with them.

my favorite of hers is The Pact. And I just read her newest one Lone Wolf but I was not a fan at all :)

  6. Funnily enough I haven't read one of Picoult's book for a while-but I am reading one just now...and I get tired of her formats-nearly every book is the same-but they are always a bit of an emotional read-which can be nice at times.

  8. Omg, I love Picoult's books. I can never put them down. I first read My Sister's Keeper--I haven't seen the movie, but I heard that they changed one of the major plot points. I've also read Nineteen Minutes, House Rules, Change of Heart, The Tenth Circle, The Pact, and Keeping Faith.

The only one that disappointed me was The Tenth Circle, probably because it was very different than her usual work.

I love how her books present such difficult moral situations and provide multiple POVs. Usually each book has multiple twists, and I've only managed to guess one or two twists in each book.

  10. My Sister's Keeper is the first Picoult book I read, and my favorite! I HATED the movie after reading the book. 19 Minutes and The Pact are two of my other favorites.
