Number Locked Out

When one of my co-workers tries to show me something on my computer, she normally has a difficult time of it. The reason being that my number lock key isn't normally on. See she goes to type in number using the number pad, and can't figure out why the number don't show up on screen. Whereas whenever I type numbers on my computer I always use the digits right on top of the numbers.

Out of curiosity, I've asked most of my other co-workers, and it seems I'm the only one that uses the actual number keys and not the number pad on the right. Even if I tried to use the number pad, I would have no idea what I was pressing. Instead I'd have to look at each key to make sure I'm touching the same one. I'm sure its the same if they were to try to use the numbers up top. So my questions is, which is the correct way to use a keyboard?

I seem to remember learning to type using Mario Typing, and you only go to move Mario if you typed the numbers on the top. It didn't count if you used the number pad. (And yes, I remember learning to type with Mario Typing. Some people had Mario on their Nintendo, but until I was in middle school and we bought a 64, it was only Mario typing for me.) Although it could have been I number had number lock on as a kid, and that's why I couldn't get Mario to stomp any mushrooms.

So my question to all of you out in blog land is, Which numbers on the keyboard do you use? And which do you think are the "correct" one to use. I'm guessing if you use the number pad, you probably think those are correct. But maybe there's some people who actually believe they're using the wrong numbers. Maybe I really am the only one who uses the number up top. (If so, why do they put them there!) But hopefully you'll let me know I'm completely normal and other people use those numbers too.

  1. When I had a desktop, I used the number pad on the left. Then when I moved to a laptop at work, I had to get used to using the numbers at the top! If you use the keypad on the left for long enough, you memorize where the numbers are placed. I used to be a whiz on that thing!

  2. I used the number pad on the side of the keyboard. Like your coworker I have a hard time when working with other coworker's computers.

  4. well, this is one great question. really.
i use the top ones at my PC and only recently i 'discovered' that i can also use the ones in the right. go figure, lol:D:D:D
it's just that those in the right seem "too far" so i stick to the top ones, although the pad ones are a bit official to me, you know.
so, the question remains. oh, the mystery:D

  5. Ha Ha! Funny question... I don't think there is a correct way to type the numbers. I think it's what you prefer.

I only have a laptop so I use the number keys on the top of the key pad. When I use my parent's desktop, I use the number pad on the right side.

  6. I JUST had this same quandry at work! It's the only place I use a desktop and I found myself instinctively trying to use the number pad, especially if I'm just changing numbers...I just turn it off and use them now!
On my laptop I use the top ones, obviously :)

  7. On my desktop at work I use to the number key pad on the side but on my laptop I don't have a choice and have to use the single bar at the top.

  8. I use the numbers on top because I use a laptop all the time and there is no number pad. but even when I had a desktop, I used the numbers on top! like you, I have to look at what I'm doing when I used a number pad, even though I did technically learn to use one in my high school typing class. but I was never very good at it. and to be honest, I still have to look sometimes when using the numbers on top! I'm very good and very fast at typing, but whenever I have to do numbers, they slow me down! :)

  9. I specifically bought my laptop because it had a 9-key as part of the keyboard. I don't like using the top row of numbers because I am super slow, but I am really, really speedy at the 9-key after years of working in finance.

  10. I use a laptop so I just use the numbers on top of the letters. At this point I would be totally lost WITH that number pad!!
