A Casual Enchantment

Anathema by K.A. Tucker
Evangeline is so excited when Sophie offers her, her first ever job. And when Sophie asks her to travel with her to New York, being an ophran on the eve of her 18th birthday, she had no reason to say no. But once there Evangeline starts having dreams like never before. What follows is a adventure through an alternate universive with vampires, soceresses, and werebeasts, where Evangeline must decide where her alligence lies.

To be honest, I didn't think I would enjoy this. But I'm happy to say that wasn't the case at all. I really fell into this story, and thought the whole premise was a really unique idea. There were quite a number of twists and turns, and maybe I'm just bad at predicting, but I never had any idea what to expect.

My main complaint was with the alternative universe, or maybe it was just another planet in our univierse, this concept wasn't explained very well. I do think with the world of Ratheus, Tucker had such potnetial to create a brand new world, without any consraints. Instead it's supposed to be somewhat of a post-apocalyptic earth, but I never quite got that feel or really a true feel for what this world was like.

The novel ends with a fairly large, and what I thought unexpected, twist. It's an ending that definitely makes me want to pick up the sequal, which conveinatly came out last month. I'm just hoping the sequal lives up to the first!

4.5/5
