Then Came You by Jennifer WeinerIn general I'm a big fan of Jennifer Weiner's books. Some of her books would probably rank as my favorite chick-lit type books (In Her Shoes, Little Earthquakes, and Good in Bed in particular), although unfortunately I haven't been as big of a fan of her recent books, Best Friends Forever and Fly Away Home. So while I was excited to read this one, I wasn't sure which side of the spectrum this would fall one. Thankfully though, I think this is one of her better books, and by the end really loved the story.
Within the story we meet all the women who play a part in the birth of a new baby. There's the egg donor, the surrogate, the "trophy wife" who can't get pregnant, and her the "trophy wife's" stepdaughter. With such a set-up you obviously know it's about babies and motherhood, but it's such a different story than her Little Earthquakes which does also deal with motherhood.
The book did start out a little slow for me, but I think part of that was having to introduce each chapter and keep them all straight. But about 2/3 through the book there was an unexpected twist that I hadn't expected, and from there I couldn't stop reading.
I'm not a mother (at least not anytime soon) but I would imagine anyone who is, or even someday wants to be, would love this book. But I think even if motherhood is the last thing on your mind, there are enough subplots going on here, that I think it'd be hard not to at least enjoy some aspect of it.

ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting book. I haven't read any of her other books, but I think a book involving the birth of a baby from in vitro fertilization would be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you- I don't always love her books, but this one was really good, I thought. Jennifer Weiner is in DC next week, and I am going to see her, to hear about the newest book!
